Old Ordnance Survey Maps of Shetland

We have published a map of the most northerly town in Britain; here are the details.

  • Sheet 53.13 Lerwick 1900 - published 2000, introduction by Alan Godfrey

Though Lerwick does not have a great building, such as Kirkwall's St Magnus Cathedral, it is to many people a more interesting town, with the waters of Bressay Sound coming right up to many of the old piers and warehouses. Commercial Street winds narrowly through the busy centre. This map captures it in a boom period, when the port bustled with fishing boats from Scandinavia, Germnany and especially Holland, with which it has had surprisingly close links.

Many visitors will be tempted by the regular ferry across the Sound to Bressay, and our backing map includes a section of that island's shore.

You might find this index map useful.

The maps cost just £ 2.25 each. You can now order maps direct from our On-line Mapshop. For other information and postage costs, see Index Page and Ordering Information Page.

Most maps in the Godfrey Edition are taken from the 25 inch to the mile map and reduced to about 15 inches to the mile. For a full list of maps for Scotland, go to the Scotland page
