Old Ordnance Survey Inch to the Mile Maps

  • These maps normally cover an area of about 18 miles by 12 miles and are especially good at showing railways, roads and canals, and at giving a broad view of a wider area. Each includes an introduction and a more detailed map of a small town or village. They are available through our On-line Mapshop

  • Here is information about Sheet 164:

  • One Inch Sheet 164 SW Montgomeryshire 1908 - published 2001; intro by Alan Leather. ISBN.978-1-84151-329-4

This One Inch to the Mile map covers much of southern Montgomeryshire, with coverage stretching from Y Foel, Pen Plynlimon-Arwystli and Plynlimon Fawr eastward to Penstrowed; and from Carno southward to Llangurig. Much of the area is mountainous, especially to the west, but roads and railways go up the valleys of the Severn and the Carno. Llanidloes, near the centre of the map, is the only town, although Caersws, once home to a Roman camp, has a workhouse. The Cambrian Railway is shown and also a long stretch of their Mid Wales line, the Van Railway, and the route of the already disused line to Llangurig. Railway historians will also enjoy our backing map, an extract from Montgomery Sheet 41.12, which shows Y Fan in detail, including the Van Mines, mineral tramlines, and the end of the Van Railway, including Garth & Van Road station.

It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map. Links are given for those for which detailed large-scale maps are also available.
