Old Ordnance Survey Maps of Deal

We have published more than 1,800 maps in our series of Old Ordnance Survey Map reprints, including a group in Kent. The maps are highly detailed. They are taken from the OS 1:2,500 (or 25 inch) maps and reduced to about 15 inches to the mile. Each covers an area of a mile and a half by a mile. They show streets with individual houses, tram tracks, railway tracks and even signals, factories, wharves and such details as fountains and water troughs. They will provide hours of fascination for historians and genealogists. The maps are neatly folded and each includes a specially written introduction to the area. Maps can be purchased on our On-line Mapshop where further information about titles is given. Or visit The Index Page for a full list to the series and details of Prices.

Here are the details of maps for Deal:

  • Kent Sheet 58.04 Deal 1871 - published 1991; introduction by Elizabeth Lockwood

This detailed and early Ordnance Survey map is double-sided to provide maximum coverage of the town. The principal map (Sheet 58.04) covers the southern half of the town, from Lower Street southward to The Strand and Lord Warden Inn; and from the North and South Promenades westward to Upper Deal, with St Leonard's church, and Sholden, with St Nicholas church. These are both shown as tiny villages but the many busy features of Deal itself include Deal Castle, Royal Marine Hospital Barracks, Victoria Town, St Andrew's church, railway station (then a terminus), Royal Signal Tower, St George's church, Middle Deal House. On the reverse is a large section of the map to the north, Sheet 48.16, covering the northern half of the town. This includes Beach Street, Middle Street, Alfred Square, Gas Works, Kennel Farm, and coverage extends north to the Good Intent pub and ruins of Sandown Castle.
