Old Ordnance Survey Inch to the Mile Maps

  • These maps normally cover an area of about 18 miles by 12 miles and are especially good at showing railways, roads and canals, and at giving a broad view of a wider area. Each includes an introduction and a more detailed map of a small town or village. They are available through our On-line Mapshop

  • Here is information about Sheets 66 & 74:

  • One Inch Sheet 66/74 The Fylde & Southport 1896 - published 2005; intro by Alan Godfrey.978-1-84151-819-0

This title, at an Inch to the Mile, includes two sheets, 66 and 74, here placed side by side. Sheet 64 covers the northern part of the Fylde, from Blackpool northward to Fleetwood, eastward to Poulton, but also including some of the area east of the Wyre, including Preesall and Stalmine. Sheet 64 continues coverage south, and includes Lytham, St Annes and, further south and across the Ribble Estuary, the major town of Southport, which was more important than Blackpool in the 19th century. On the reverse we include a detailed map of Knott End, a resort that never quite took off, showing its own railway.

It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map. Links are given for those for which detailed large-scale maps are also available.

  • Lancashire: Birkdale, Bispham, Blackpool, Fleetwood, Lytham, Poulton le Fylde, Preesall with Hackensall, Singleton, Southport, St Annes on the Sea, Stalmine with Staynall, Thornton.
