We have published more than 2,100 maps in our series of Old Ordnance Survey Map reprints, including a group in South Yorkshire. The maps are highly detailed. They are taken from the OS 1:2,500 (or 25 inch) maps and reduced to about 15 inches to the mile. Each covers an area of a mile and a half by a mile. They show streets with individual houses, tram tracks, railway tracks and even signals, factories, wharves and such details as fountains and water troughs. They will provide hours of fascination for historians and genealogists. The maps are neatly folded and each includes a specially written introduction to the area. Maps can be purchased on our On-line Mapshop where further information about titles is given. Or visit The Index Page for a full list to the series and details of Prices.
Here are the details of maps for Sheffield:
This detailed and very busy map covers the heart of Sheffield. As it is a major map in the series, we have published two versions, for different dates, so that you can see how the area developed across the years. Each covers the same area, with coverage stretching from Tenter Street and Hawley Street eastward to Worthing Road, and from Montford Street southward to Talbot Street. Most of the city centre is shown in great detail, with individual buildings neatly delineated, and major features include the northern half of Midland station with northern approaches; Victoria station, Bridgehouses Goods station, Wicker Goods station, Sheffield & S Yorkshire Navigation, River Don, Effingham Street Gas Works, Cyclops Works, St John's church, Hyde Park Drill Ground, Park Iron Works, Salmon Pastures Yard, Burton Weir Brewery, Don Steel Works, Nunnery Goods station, Emmanuel church, Smithfield Market, Castlefolds Market, Clyde Steel & Iron Works, Sheaf Saw Mills, Norfolk Market Hall, St Peter's church, St Paul's church, Town Hall, Globe Steel Works, Kelham Island, tramways, and much more. On the reverse we include some extracts from a contemporary street directory.
The map links up with Sheets 294.04 Sheffield North to the north, 294.07 Sheffield West to the west, 295.05 Darnall to the east and 294.12 Sheffield Park to the south.
