Historical Introductions

Each of our maps includes a specially written introduction, giving a background history and explaining many of the features to be found on the map.

A great many authors have contributed to the series over the years. Many of the introductory essays are written by Alan Godfrey himself, but other authors currently writing for the series include Mike Bone, Mike Greatbatch, Anthea Lang, Chris Makepeace, Barbara Morris, Richard Oliver, Tony Painter, Kay Parrott, Ruth Strong, Pamela Taylor, Barrie Trinder and others.
