OLD ORDNANCE SURVEY MAPS: THE GODFREY EDITION

July Newsletter

Well, we finally missed a Newsletter. Our financial year ends at the the end of May and so the last few days are busy with stock-taking and other delights.

We haven't gone away but have been working hard. We are especially delighted with the response to our coloured editions, of which we have now brought out 8 - for Birmingham, Burslem, Exeter, Hanley, Huddersfield, Hull (W), Leeds (NW) and Pudsey. More will follow, and hopefully at least one each month. A few people have asked for more information about these and I will say more later, perhaps in the next Newsletter. One regular query is the reason why a few buildings are coloured grey and not pink. These were buildings in wood or iron, and so presumably regarded as somewhat less permanent. Handcolouring of OS 25" maps continued until about 1893 and the OS priced them according to the amount of colouring required. But more of this later.

As usual, I continue to travel researching notes for the maps, the best part of the job! The attached photos are all places I have visited in the last month or so for forthcoming maps (none of which are out yet). A seaside town, a clifftop castle, an early engine roundhouse and a 'stately home'(with splendid staircase). They are in 4 different counties.

Years ago we used to run a 'Mystery Map' competition. Well, I don't promise to revive that - there are only so many hours in the day - but here is a one-off 'mystery photo' competition. Do you know where these 4 photos are of? If so, send your answers to suzanne@alangodfreymaps.co.uk by 31st July and we will put your name into a hat. The first correct name out of the hat will receive 4 maps, which you can choose from our current publications. I think it's difficult, so Good Luck! If there are no correct answers, we will go for the best attempt.
