These are the detailed maps currently available in our Nairnshire series:

  • Nairnshire Sheet 1.16 Nairn 1904 - published 1991, introduction by Eleanor Somerville

Nairn was developed into a seaside resort in the mid 19th century; it was described as "The Brighton of the North". This was largely due to Dr John Grigor who built or encouraged the Marine Family Hotel, where many of his patients stayed for the fresh air; and the Nairn Sea Water Swimming Baths. By 1875 there were six horse drawn bathing machines on the beach. Earlier the construction of a harbour had been less successful, as Thomas Telford's designs were modified. It was badly damaged in severe floods in 1829.

Most maps in the Godfrey Edition are taken from the 25 inch to the mile map and reduced to about 15 inches to the mile. They cost just £ 3.00 each. For a full list of Scottish maps, return to the Scotland page
