We have published more than 1,800 maps in our series of Old Ordnance Survey Map reprints, some 300 of them in the London area. The maps are highly detailed. They are taken from the OS 1:2,500 (or 25 inch) maps and reduced to about 15 inches to the mile. They show streets with individual houses, tram tracks, railway tracks and even signals, factories, wharves and such details as fountains and water troughs. They will provide hours of fascination for historians and genealogists. The maps are neatly folded and each includes a specially written introduction to the area. We have published two versions of this map, showing how the area developed across the years. The maps each cover the same area of central London, stretching from the British Museum eastward to Guildhall, and from Clerkenwell Road southward to Waterloo Bridge. The features on these crowded maps are too many to be listed, but include Covent Garden, Lincoln's Inn Fields; Blackfriars, Ludgate Hill, Holborn Viaduct and Aldersgate stations; Southwark and Blackfriars Bridges; part of Bloomsbury; Fleet Street, The Strand, Somerset House, St Paul's Cathedral, The Temple, Smithfield, Cheapside and much more. The 1873 map has street directories for Fleet St, Holborn and Strand, the 1914 maps has entries for Fleet St, Kingsway and Strand.
These busy maps are essential for any historian of London. Bear in mind, however, that they are very crowded; for many parts of the area larger scale maps are also available in our London Large Scale Series.
