Old Ordnance Survey Maps of Dumbartonshire

Dumbartonshire is a confusing county, split into separate sections spread across the top of Glasgow. Even the spelling is confused, as more recently it has been spelt Dunbartonshire. Anyway, we are publishing a few maps here, which help develop our good coverage of the Glasgow conurbation, linking up with sheets for Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire. Further details about individual maps are given on our On-line Mapshop.

  • 17.06 Craigendoran & Helensburgh (East) 1897 - published 2006, introduction by Gilbert Bell
  • 22.06 Dumbarton 1897 - published 2002, introduction by Gilbert Bell
  • 23.08 Milngavie 1896 - published 2003, intro by Gilbert Bell
  • 25.02 Clydebank 1896 - published 1988, intro by Pat Malcolm
  • 33.02 Kirkintilloch 1896 - published 1994, introduction by Don Martin

Apart from the obvious local interest, the maps will be of especial interest to industrial archaeologists, with a wealth of detail concerning transport and industry, nowhere more so than on the Clydebank map, with its Clydebank Shipbuilding Works, where such liners as the Lusitania were built and the Kilbowie Factory where the Singer Manufacturing Co developed their great works, by the 1880s employing more than 5,000 making sewing machines.

You might find these index maps useful for

  • West Dumbartonshire: Dumbarton, Clydebank, Milngavie
  • East Dumbartonshire: Kirkintilloch

The maps cost just £ 2.25 each. You can now order maps direct from our On-line Mapshop. For other information and postage costs, see Index Page and Ordering Information Page.
